Sasol’s Southwest Louisiana employees manufacture chemicals used in the production of cleaning, personal care, pharmaceutical and automotive products at its Lake Charles Chemical Complex near Westlake, Louisiana.

Sasol’s Louisiana operations began in 2001 with the purchase of CONDEA Vista’s Lake Charles assets. Sasol has since consistently grown its Louisiana operations, most recently with the construction of its historic $12.9 billion Lake Charles Chemicals Project. Completed in late 2020, the project is one of the largest economic impact projects in the state’s history.

Today, Sasol is one of the largest industrial employers in Southwest Louisiana, providing jobs to more than 1,000 employees and contract employees.

The Lake Charles Chemical Complex is composed of two operating entities: Sasol’s Lake Charles East Plant and Sasol’s Lake Charles West Plant.

Sasol East Plant
Sasol’s Lake Charles East Plant includes seven units. The products produced by these units make essential care products  primarily used in the cleaning and personal care markets to manufacture ingredients for soaps, detergents, shampoos, cosmetics, healthcare supplies, in addition to specialty chemicals used in mild abrasives, thickeners and pharmaceuticals.

Sasol West Plant
Sasol’s Lake Charles West plant includes two units which produce the essential care products primarily used in the manufacturing of polyester fiber for clothing, upholstery, carpet and pillows, fiberglass, detergents, soaps and more.

Sasol-LyondellBasell Louisiana Integrated Polyethylene, LLC Joint Venture

Louisiana Integrated Polyethylene, LLC
Louisiana Integrated Polyethylene, LLC, a 50/50 joint venture between Sasol and LyondellBasell, is operated by LyondellBasell and located near Westlake, Louisiana. The joint venture consists of an ethane cracker and two manufacturing units that produce consumer plastic products such as wrappings, bags and molded forms.

Sasol Chemicals’ research and development laboratory is also located at the Lake Charles Chemical Complex. The North America R&D team of includes more than 80 scientists, engineers and technical staff, most with masters and doctoral engineering and science degrees. The group operates a state-of-the-art analytical chemistry laboratory and provides support services to operations and customers.

Community Investment

Sasol recognizes that its operations will be successful only if the communities where it operates share in that success and remain sustainable over the long term. Sasol is actively engaged in the communities where its employees live and work and seek input from near neighbors about priorities and concerns.

Over the past five years, Sasol has committed more than $5 million and 6,000 volunteer hours to the Southwest Louisiana community through the company’s signature corporate social investment initiatives.
