This is Sasol’s new purpose – our reason for being. This statement answers a key question: why does Sasol exist? We are taking bold steps to reimagine our future, and this is reflected in our new purpose statement.
Innovating for a better world, captures the essence of Future Sasol, and our ‘can-do’ spirit, so ingrained in our DNA, that it pushes us to always strive for excellence and adopt new approaches, to continuously evolve and improve. Innovating speaks to doing things differently, and in new ways. It touches on every aspect of Sasol: from our technologies, to our products, to how we run our plants, serve our customers and communities, build our brand and unleash the full potential of our people and business. Innovating is how we remain relevant, and competitive, in a volatile and unpredictable marketplace.
One of the strategic intents of Future Sasol is to deliver, triple bottom line outcomes focusing on People, Planet and Profit. To expand on this, Future Sasol will see us enhance our employee value proposition, improve social upliftment in our communities and foster stronger customer and stakeholder relationships. We will advance sustainability, and product innovation to reduce our environmental impacts. All of this will contribute to making Sasol a more attractive investment proposition to our shareholders.
The triple bottom line outcomes of People, Planet and Profit are not mutually exclusive. They are all interconnected – therefore performing well and responsibly in all these areas, will ensure, we are a force for good and ultimately contributing to a better world. As with our new purpose statement, our values carry deep meaning for Team Sasol. And, the two are closely linked, because we can fulfil our purpose by living the Sasol values.
OUR REFOCUSED VALUES
At Sasol our values have always connected us, serving as a common bond that we are duty-bound to live up to, each day, with every thought, word and action.
We have refocused our values by reducing the number of statements and shortening them into single words, to make the values crisper and easier to remember. We also want our values to be action-orientated to easily translate into our daily interactions and behaviors. For this reason, we preface our values with the word “BE”, a verb.
- Be safe. We place the safety of people first.
Safety is at the core of our operations and day-to-day business. It is our deepest desire that all our colleagues return safely to their friends and family each day. This links strongly to our next value.
- Be caring.
We care deeply for our people, planet, communities. A culture of caring encompasses many things: leaders caring about employees, employees caring for each other, for customers, for fenceline communities, and for each other’s families. A culture of caring impacts bottom line in that it impacts employee focus, empowerment and hence engagement. Without caring, we cannot adequately ensure the safety of our colleagues or decarbonize our planet. We are all on a journey together – it matters and we care.

We boldly adapt to change and embrace agility. COVID-19, the extended periods of lockdown and decreased product demand and price, have brought out true agility and innovation at Sasol. Team Sasol showed real resilience and innovation dealing with the slower product demand, smarter operation of our plants, finding ways to save money and protect our balance sheet, innovating around plant shut-downs and maintenance, renegotiating contracts with suppliers, delivering outcomes in legal and banking negotiations all in the midst of a global pandemic.
